Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Dell Medical School recognizes the value of diversity and is committed to developing and implementing programs to create a vibrant, inclusive environment to support diverse staff, students, trainees and faculty. Dell Med defines diversity broadly to include race, ethnicity, abilities (mental and physical), first generation to attend college, gender, gender identity, immigrant status, language, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, age and other groups.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion takes a multifaceted approach to creating an inclusive system to address the following priorities.

Dell Med works with The University of Texas at Austin Division of Diversity and Community Engagement to enhance the pipeline and recruit, train and retain a cadre of leaders in health care and academic medicine from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine.

Dell Med works to create the most supportive learning and work environment for staff, students, trainees and faculty. Dell Med embraces differences, promotes allyship, and prepares learners to challenge and address societal inequities by establishing a safe space to have difficult yet meaningful conversations.

Dell Med is committed to serving communities of the 21st century. The school ensures that students, trainees and faculty are prepared to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to our diverse patient populations.

Dell Med partners with Austin’s diverse communities and community organizations to identify and address existing health care and societal needs. Dell Med is committed to engaging the residents of Austin and Travis County, and serve as an anchor institution promoting localism and community-based entrepreneurship.

Dell Med is committed to developing evidence-based approaches to increase diversity in the health care workforce and deliver quality care to diverse patient populations.

The office reports on the demographic categories of faculty and staff defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges due to underrepresentation in medicine.
