Curriculum

This unique training program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive foundation of medical knowledge and skills in the subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery with a focus on team-based, interdisciplinary care for musculoskeletal disease. The curriculum equips surgeons with the knowledge and skills to improve the value of care they provide to their patients. Each resident develops a foundation of medical knowledge, clinical skills, and leadership and interpersonal skills through practice in interdisciplinary Integrated Practice Units (IPUs).

Curriculum Components

The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program upholds the ethical standards, principles and practices established by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Residents learn to incorporate these principles and practices into every facet of their professional life.

In addition to traditional orthopaedic education, our program provides unique opportunities for residents to become leaders and innovators in the transformation of health care. Residents can apply for admission into the school’s Distinction Track in Care Transformation [link] that provides training and mentorship to be successful leaders of the shift to high-value, patient-centered care. Residents pursuing a distinction have the opportunity to individualize their curriculum, develop leadership skills, complete meaningful scholarly projects and form relationships with experienced mentors.

Residents also develop an understanding of the importance of providing care to populations that face the most obstacles to care — locally and abroad — through direct patient care, knowledge exchange and exposure to a global health experience. Each resident has the opportunity to complete an international orthopaedic rotation during the elective block in the fourth year of residency.
