Clinical Work & Research

The fellow will dedicate approximately 80% of their time to clinical work: roughly 1.5 days per week in the clinic and 2.5 days per week in the operating room. The remaining time is dedicated to a combination of research, practice management and policy-oriented activities including shadowing Dell Medical School’s chair of surgery and perioperative care, Kevin Bozic, M.D., MBA, as he works with stakeholders to build, implement and evaluate value-based delivery and payment models in Austin and throughout the country. Bozic is the incoming president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, so the fellow has the opportunity to be directly involved in shaping the future of orthopaedic care for patients in the U.S.

The fellow works closely with the chief of orthopaedic surgery at Dell Med, Karl Koenig, M.D., M.S., as well. Koenig has directed the development and implementation of the unique integrated practice unit care model that is employed at the Musculoskeletal Institute. He is also the Chairman of the AAOS Healthcare Systems Committee, which creates and advises the AAOS Board on health policy and works to integrate musculoskeletal care delivery across the nation.

The fellow also has the opportunity to work closely with a multidisciplinary health services research team led by dedicated research faculty member, Prakash Jayakumar, M.D., Ph.D., and consisting of health economists, biometricians, social scientists and design engineers. This collaboration will allow the fellow to pursue their own research interests while helping further the institute’s multifaceted research goals, including value-based payment and novel health care delivery models.

Clinical & Teaching Conferences

The fellow will be actively engaged in both organizing and participating in undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education activities.
