It is a critical time for addiction psychiatry, with the opioid overdose epidemic making the need for addiction treatment greater than ever.
The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship not only provides outstanding and broad clinical training, it also develops fellows as scholars and leaders in shaping the system of care as we know it, with the mission of serving people who are underserved and the most vulnerable. Dell Medical School has brought a tremendous faculty together at Integral Care, the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research in addition to a deep research faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work and Department of Neuroscience.
Addiction psychiatry holds great promise and numerous opportunities for clinical practice, education, policy and research, especially in Austin. With fewer addiction psychiatrists in Central Texas compared to other areas, there is an immense energy and enthusiasm for expanding addiction treatment and education, fueled by the energy and innovation of Dell Medical School as well as increased public attention to gaps in treatment.
I invite you to be part of this vibrant community building a system of care that more powerfully addresses the needs of the population. Apply to the fellowship, meet the faculty and staff during interviews and visit us here in Austin, a lively city that offers access to all of the benefits of urban culture and entertainment while also having a plethora of parks and natural beauty.
