Discovering Value-Based Health Care

Dell Medical School built value-based care into the DNA of its curriculum. Now it’s time to empower everyone to deliver high-value care to patients.

Discovering Value-Based Health Care is a set of interactive, online learning modules that teach the foundations of value unlike any other educational tool available. The first two collections, bundled as “Introduction to Value-Based Health Care” and "Value-Based Health Care Delivery," are available free to all learners, part of the school’s mission to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy. The curriculum introduces:

  • The concept of value and how to apply it into everyday practice
  • How measuring outcomes that matter to patients is key to creating value
  • How health care costs are calculated and how they affect patients
  • Examples of care delivery models built around value

A First-of-its-Kind Curriculum 

Unlike other offerings aimed at practicing physicians, Discovering Value-Based Health Care is focused on giving learners a strong foundation in value-based health care that can be leveraged throughout their careers. It is adaptive and interactive — taking advantage of the latest in instructional technology — thanks to a partnership with the Institute for Transformational Learning, a UT System effort focused on making learning flexible, personalized and data-driven. The modules can be completed by independent learners — no faculty champion required.

Discovering Value-Based Health Care is being developed in part due to a grant from the Episcopal Health Foundation awarded to Kevin Bozic, MD, chair of Dell Med’s Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care. The curricula, which will include additional modules in the future, is supervised by Sue Cox, MD, executive vice dean of academics.

The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School designates this enduring material for a maximum of 2.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
