About
Sullivan Ayuso, M.D., is a licensed general surgeon in UT Health Austin’s General Surgery Clinic. He specializes in hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery.
Ayuso earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and sociology from Emory University and his medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed a residency in general surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, where he served as administrative chief resident. He also completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Endeavor Health in Evanston, Illinois.
Ayuso’s clinical interests focus primarily on abdominal wall hernias as well as diaphragmatic hernias, obesity and esophageal motility disorders. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications. He is an active member of numerous professional societies, including serving on the editorial board for the Journal of Abdominal Wall Reconstruction. He currently serves as a committee member for the American Hernia Society and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is actively involved in surgical education and outreach and serves as a frequent contributor for the Behind the Knife podcast.
