Joseph Miles Abell Jr., M.D., Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery

Providing Robust Training in Value-Based Orthopaedic Care

The Joseph Miles Abell Jr., M.D., Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is designed to provide fellows with a comprehensive and rigorous training experience in the evaluation and management of osteoarthritis and lower extremity arthroplasty problems. The program’s mission is to train surgeons to be compassionate, capable care providers and leaders of health systems with a broad knowledge base and skill set related to the management of lower extremity joint problems, integrated delivery systems, and value-based health care delivery and payment models.

The Joseph Miles Abell Jr., M.D., Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery is affiliated with Dell Med’s Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care.

Training Facilities

Fellows practice in a variety of clinical settings including private practice, community-based settings and academic hospitals and clinics.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of Dell Med, is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. Operated by Ascension Seton, the medical center is part of a growing health district.

Austin’s largest medical/surgical acute care center, Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin is the only hospital in Central Texas that performs heart transplants. The Magnet hospital and Primary Stroke Center offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for both inpatients and outpatients and regional specialty programs.

At UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Med, teams of experts provide patient-centered care for everything from severe osteoarthritis to mild ankle sprains. Orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists, associate providers, physical therapists, social workers and nutritionists come together to address each patient’s health needs.

Fourth-year orthopaedic surgery residents can apply for the fellowship through the San Francisco Match service.

Training to Be a Health Care Leader

The fellow dedicates 60% of training time to clinical work and 40% to a combination of research and policy-oriented activities.
